Grab bars and bathroom safety
This is the most important job on this list and the one people put off longest. A grab bar screwed into drywall alone will hold a towel. It will not hold a person going down, which is the only moment it matters.
What the job involves
- Bars anchored into studs or blocking wherever they exist
- Where there is no stud, rated steel toggles, never plastic anchors
- Height and angle set for the person who will actually use it, with them there if possible
- Shower, tub and toilet positions, which are three different problems
- Sealed at the flange so water cannot get behind the plate
- Handheld shower brackets, shower seats and raised toilet frames fitted
What is not included
- Anything that involves opening a water line or moving a fixture
- Cutting into tile without agreeing it first
- Structural changes to a shower enclosure
What it costs
$140 for the first hour and most bathrooms take one. Two or three bars in the same visit is the sensible way to do it.
